And I Quote

this-or-that: reading

permalink | cm(0) | tb(0) | this-or-that

1. Newspapers or magazines? magazines, you've gotta go get a newspaper every single day and half of it isn't worth reading. the newspapers that are worth reading, i read online.
2. Books-on-tape or regular books? regular books. i tried the books-on-tape thing from the library. i got about halfway through the book and my trip and the rest of the tapes were ruined. books-on-cd will be the way to go next time.
3. Paperback or hardcover? whatever's available. i prefer paperback though.
4. Fiction or non-fiction? mostly non-fiction, thougu i've been craving fiction more and more here lately.
5. Sci-Fi/Fantasy or romance novels? definitely not romance. i'm more into the mystery/thriller/action type.
6. Borrow from library or buy books (either new or used)? buy, usually. new.
7. Subscribe to magazines or buy on newsstand? subscribe. it'd cost a fortune to always buy from the newsstand. i get wired for $12 a year as opposed to $6/month at the newsstand. however, reading at the newsstand and replacing, that's the way to go. if you can avoid the ones with the plastic wrap. and no i'm not talking about the ones on the top shelf.
8. Current best-sellers or classic literature? uhhh...current. i had enough of the classics in high school and college. maybe someday though.
9. Read books once, or re-read favorites every so often? fiction, once, almost always. non-fiction, re-read, sometimes.
10. Here in the U.S., we have two hot best-sellers...former First Lady Hillary Clinton's memoirs, and the new Harry Potter book (coming out June 21). If you had to read one, which one...Hillary or Harry? Why? harry. even though both books' main characters are witches, at least harry isn't a democrat.

monster's ball

permalink | cm(0) | tb(0) | movies

ssssllllllllooooooowwwwww!!!! too much sex. not enough plot. not worth waiting on. i don't know what i thought monster's ball was...but i was obviously wrong.

i suppose there were some life lessons in there. the whole "racist white trash can have a change of heart but only if the black woman he's seducing looks like halle berry and throws herself on him" lesson. it's not entertaining at all and at most it will make you depressed.

IMHO.

the recruit

permalink | cm(0) | tb(0) | movies

anything with al pacino has got to be good and "the recruit" is no exception. it has it's slow parts at the beginning as the new cia recruits get their training but even that has its twists and turns. the action really picks up about half way though when james (colin farrell) gets his first assignment to root out a mole in the cia. the twists and turns go from there as the spy games begin. i'd give it a slightly above average. it's worth renting but don't expect too much from it.

finding nemo

permalink | cm(0) | tb(0) | movies

yes, i went to see pixar's newest film "finding nemo." it was great. i laughed out loud several times throughout the movie. there was only one part of the movie that didn't seem to fit quite right but it was short and sweet. the rest of the movie is hilarious. dory (ellen degeneres), the fish who suffers from short-term memory loss, carries the movie. her part alone is worth going to see.

PIKEVILLE, Kentucky (AP) -- A pen and ink sealed the end of Appalachia's most infamous bloody feud instead of a shotgun and bullets.

Descendants of the Hatfield and McCoy families gathered Saturday in Pikeville to sign the truce, making a largely symbolic and official end to a feud that had claimed at least a dozen lives from the two mountain families.

the matrix reloaded : abridged script

permalink | cm(0) | tb(0) | links

for those of you who were also disappointed with "the matrix reloaded". there are spoilers.

KEANU enters a white room, the walls of which are covered
in monitors. A chair spins around to reveal THE EXPLAINER.

KEANU REEVES
Who are you?

THE EXPLAINER
I am The Explainer. I designed the
matrix screenplay. Unable to
decently explain the convoluted plot
well, I have resorted to putting
myself here in the final act and
having you ask all of the questions
the audience wants to ask.
(dramatic pause)
You must begin by asking your own
questions then gradually switch to
asking those of the audience, in
order to not make this scene any
more awkward than it already is.
Concordantly, while your first
question may be the most pertinent,
you may or may not realize it is
also the most irrelevant.

the greatest show on earth

permalink | cm(0) | tb(0) | me

yesterday i went to see the 133rd ringling brothers & barnum & bailey's circus in topeka with jamie jo and the family. i've been to the rb&b&b's circus before but i was very little and remember very little about it. there were clowns, dancing elephants and horses, trapezeists (?), daring motorcycle riders, highly skilled dogs and of course fierce tigers hopping around on their hind quarters like kangaroos. the grand finale was "bailey's comet" featuring a man being fired across the arena from a cannon, that looked more like a sci-fi laser gun, and flying in flames safely onto an airbag.

the death defying feats are just as death defying today as they were 133 years ago when the circus began, but the "oohs" and "ahhs" just weren't there like they would have been then. we see stuff like this everyday now on tv shows like "fear factor" and "survivor". the flashy lights and the show of the circus is unique, but the danger involved isn't. i hope the circus can live on for another 133 years because it isn't everyday you get to see a tiger pretend to be a kangaroo.

wanna start blogging?

permalink | cm(0) | tb(0) | links

if you want to start blogging but don't know where to start i'd suggest starting at the blog tool comparison table. there are lots of blog tools (free and otherwise) out there to choose from with their own pros and cons. one word of advice though, just because a feature isn't available in the blog "as is", doesn't mean it's not available through a plugin or a little tweaking of your own. enjoy.
