sweet home alabama - explained (i think)
i've heard the song all my life. i always "turn it up" when it's on the radio and now that i no longer live in alabama it's even nicer to hear. i've always wondered though about a couple of things about the song and lynyrd skynyrd themselves. like, why would a band from jacksonville, florida write a song called "sweet home alabama"? what does "muscle shoals has got the swampers" mean? i lived just outside of muscle shoals my entire life and have no idea. who is neil young and what did he sing about alabama? you get the drift. well here's what i've come up with after doing some research online.
"sweet home alabama" debuted in 1974 on lynyrd skynyrd's second album second helping. since then it has been re-recorded and re-released many times on many albums. in case you're not familiar with the song you can find the lyrics here.
the main lyrics in question are these :

And they've been known to pick a song or two

They pick me up when I'm feeling blue

neil young was a contemporary of lynyrd skynyrd. however, he was not from the south. he didn't have an appreciation of the southern culture and especially the racist attitudes of the south in that time period. young wrote two songs, "southern man", and "alabama" criticizing the south for it's stereotypical racists views. "sweet home alabama" was a response by skynyrd to those two songs.
since the 1950's muscle shoals has been one of the most successful little recording places on earth. everyone from little richard to elvis presley, donnie osmond to aretha franklin came to muscle shoals to record their albums. many times when recording, the artist's music was played by the studio musicians. there is conflicting information on who gave these studio musicians the nickname "swampers" but whoever it was, it stuck, and was immortalized in "sweet home alabama".

it's about time these celebrities were put in their place for their ignorant comments on the war. to intelligently not support the war is perfectly fine, however to make ignorant comments about the war or to not support our troops is completely unacceptable.
Hall president Dale Petroskey sent a letter to Robbins and Sarandon this week, telling them the festivities April 26-27 at Cooperstown, N.Y., had been called off.
